12 gig 8 gig on 4.7gig dvds?

hi chums

I have some older dvds which contain videos, some might have been flv files which I converted.

others were from a satellite receiver recorded to dvd via my sony dvd recorder.

I want to transfer vidios from dvd to an external hdd as I have so many dvds know.

on looking at the properties of some of my dvds (4.7g) capacity I have files of 12 gig and some of 8gig.

I am wondering how I have files that total more than capacity of my dvd. the only thing I can think of is that dvdfs were recorded in ep or long play? originally.

dvd s show video ts and video rm in dvd structure.

your views on how I might have such large files on dvd,
