convert from VOB to something editable, w/o quality loss

I have some old recorder tapes i burned onto a disc but after putting it in the computer the files come up in VOB format. I haven't been able to work with this so i used a converter to get them into mp4 format, only problem i lose like 75% of the quality.
Any suggestions?
