cam lens protection filter

Hello,

I bought a Canon Legria HF G10 and was thinking of buying a filter only for lens protection. Is there any inconvenient in doing so? Can the image quality be affected by the application of such a filter? Can you give me some tips concerning what type of filter to buy if in fact I should buy one?
