Xmedia Recode - quality settings ?

I'm really enjoying using Xmedia Recode.

Does anyone know how the quality settings work.

If I choose Custom and then the Avi Format
Does the program choose the bit rate settings it thinks best or does it default to the last setting you used ?

I like to recode with the best quality I can from wmv to avi and some mkv's to avi.
