Recording Videos while Playing in VLC

I want to record streaming videos while they are being played in VLC.

I am playing an HLS stream in VLC using an M3U8 link. If I click Record in VLC to start the recording and click Record again to stop the recording, the recording is saved as an MP4 and can be played later. If the connection drops before I stop the recording in VLC, the saved MP4 is not finalized properly and is not playable--MOOV atom not found.

How do I get VLC to save the recording to another container format, like MPEGTS, FLV, or MKV, that will be playable if the stream connection drops while it is being recorded in VLC?

Panning left right sees splits through vertical objects on Eizo Monitor

Hi,
I am running win7 64bit pro and an MSI Nvidia GTX970 video card and viewing on an Eizo CG247 59hz 1920 x 1200 monitor which I am told by Eizo is designed for video editing.

any video that is panning left-right or right-left sees the vertical objects in the filming as if they have been sliced through full width of screen with a scalpel then displaced slightly. No vertical gap between them, they slide on each other, i.e. they abutt.

This is not just on my camcorder footage, its also on my dSLR footage, and anything I view on the internet., also test footage sent me.

so if the camcorder pans to the left, the objects head off to the right in the video, the upper portion is displaced lets say 1mm to the left of the next portion which is also displaced 1mm to the left of the next portion. So a lamp post is with the displacements slightly leaning to the left one might say with 2 or 3 slices horizontally through it.

Then when the camcorder pans to the right, and the objects move left on screen, the displacement reverses so now the upper portion is displaced 1mm to the right of the next portion etc.

Each sliced width of image lags behind a bit from the slice above it. As if the video card or monitor or both cannot manage to get the entire video to move as one from left to right or right to left.

If I pause the video, the slices vanish and all the lamp post is as one without having been got at by a scalpel in a horizontal sort of way !

This is spoiling my ability to watch any video and anything I film. What with the jittery nature of 4K 25fps that I am also trying to solve I cant mentally focus on that problem and solve it with this also happening.

What is the cause and fix ?

Cheers
DBenz

Another Video capturing workflow thread. Still confused.

(Crossposted at digital FAQ)

Hey guys,

My dilemma: I need to have a small group of semi tech capable people around the country digitally capturing hundreds of non-commercial, “home made” tapes of historic live concerts into one standard format that will be archived.

File space is not a concern, and cost is secondary to detail. I need every possible bit of luma and chroma to be captured. (I will need need to learn/teach how to use histograms to make sure there’s no clipping, etc.)

For my purposes, I don’t need to know about any downstream restoration or editing, other teams will be working on that. I just want to know I am giving them (and future generations) the most possible image data to restore.

I’m going around and around in my head about the best way to accomplish my goal. I have had lots of conversations and have read everything I can find here and at videohelp, but I still can’t settle on the best workflow.

My project:

- Need to capture historically valuable concert footage from various vhs/s vhs/hi8/beta original master tapes.

- Accomplished by a small team of people (4-8) across the us. Technical ability solid but varies. Video experience limited.

- Captures will be archived “as is”, and then made available to other teams of restorers and editors who may choose to use various tools and programs to enhance/edit/fix the capture. (Totally volunteer/ ad hoc)

- Sound is secondary, as audio was taped separately using pro audio gear. As above, the captured video will be made available and other teams will create synched edits. (Totally volunteer/ ad hoc)

Progress so far:

- have been accumulating good gear with help of LS. Have several jvc vcrs & beta machines, tbc 100, Canopus avt-8710, Es-15 (2), hi 8 camera, sign video dual process amp, signvideo detailer.

- have a bunch of capture cards/devices - ati600 usb, blackmagic shuttle, pinnacle usb, Aja kona LHi and others to start testing. We will share and or buy additional as needed.

- We have unlimited storage available, size of archive is not a concern.

Format/workflow considerations: Most of the group have recent windows based machines. We don’t have any windows xp machines. We don’t have any experience with avisynth or other command line based editors.

—-

So, what do we decide to make the “standard” in terms of capture and archive?

The simplest thing to me seems to buy several capture devices that support modern drivers and capture everything in a 10-bit lossless 4:2:2 format.

Overkill? Perhaps. But probably more forgiving in terms of histogram clipping and easier to get up and running on pc equipment already owned.

Downsides? I don’t know....

I realize virtualdub matched with an ati card and huffyuv lossless is the way things are usually done around here, and if that’s the absolutely best way for us to accomplish the task we will learn to do that as well.

But if there’s an alternative workflow that would meet our specific needs better, I’d love to figure it out now, before I go much further down the rabbit hole.

Thanks in advance for the discussion and experience,

Judd

MKV Issues

Salutations All

It's been a factual while. Since I was last here, I have continued to progress in my video library, and whatever
I have not known, I have researched and looked up and learnt in most cases.

However I have a bit of an issue.

I recently went searching for episodes of an anime, been searching for it for years in 1080p and I finally found
a link with it seems every single file I was looking for. They're all MKV but I can simply use Avidemux or another
program to make it an MP4.

My factual issue comes next:

When I tried to load the file into Avidemux, if I try to play it, it is slow, takes ages and even trying to play it in
WMP, VLC or any other on my laptop results in failure. When I loaded it into MediaInfo, the result was this

Access violation at address 69A0A5D5 in module 'MEDIAINFO_1386.DLL'. Read of address 0ABEC000

That's the first time it has ever failed to do anything.

Next I tried MKVToolNix GUI, and low and behold instead of the dual audio and some subtitles and the actual
video, I have alot of other things, even 6 chapters.

I'll post an image of it below.

Image

Now I have downloaded many Mp4s, Mkvs and other video media and this is the first time I have found a file
that wasn't corrupted, is excellent quality (1080p) yet won't factually play. I cannot extract audio, saving
through MKVToolNix does nothing to change that, I even tried to convert it with Wondershare Filmora. It closed
the program after almost loading.

Now my problem is this:

What the factual hell is wrong with my file? I can provide a link to the file if you wish so you can try it yourself
but I cannot figure it out. If it's just corrupted then I'll go looking for another one no harm no factual foul.

But this is the first issue issue I have had with an MKV that wasn't obviously corrupted.

Any information would be appreciated. I try to learn where I can

can somebody help me about this stream ?

Best Software and Hardware to Convert Some DVDs to a Portable Media Player?

$

Hello! Wow, it’s been several years since I’ve been here and I’m glad to see this place still going!

I had no idea where to post this, so I chose the general forum. I hope you’re able to help me, as I have many questions and am not sure what the best equipment would be for the task.

I’m going to be traveling in the near future and want to chill with some friends in our hotel room and watch some movies. The movies I want to bring are on DVD (I don’t have a Blu-Ray drive on my PC, anyway, and SD quality is good enough for this.) I have no idea if the hotel Wi-Fi will be good enough to stream my digital copies I own from various services, and I don’t want to risk there being HDMI copy protection issues somehow from using my iPhone, so I’m wanting to just rip the DVDs, convert them, and place the video files on a card or stick to play on a portable media player of some kind to hook up to the TV.

It’s been years since I’ve ripped a DVD and whatnot, so I apologize for asking so many questions. Here they are:

1. What would be the best software to rip my discs? I don’t think I’d be ripping any recent movies, so I don’t think the protection on them would be too complex. Looking for something secure (to tell you how long it’s been since I’ve ripped anything, I remember people were always paranoid about software phoning home and whatnot. Hahaha.) and easy to use. I think I used to use DVDFab HD Decrypter as the DVD ripping portion was free.

2. What kind of codec would you recommend? Also settings and whatnot.

3. Do any of you have one of these portable media players? Any recommendations? I’m guessing HDMI output would be best since just about every hotel has a flatscreen HDTV. Of course, I could always get some composite cables as a backup.

4. Do you think this would be the best way to accomplish my goal? If not, I’d love some recommendations.

Thank you very much for reading. Have a great day and I hope you can help me! :)

Help with Aegisoft audio zoom slider not working on MacBook

Hi,
I have an annoying problem, that I hope that someone can help me with. I've been working with Aegisub on my 27" iMac and that worked fine. Now, I'm trying to use my 12" MacBook and the audio sliders don't seem to work properly. This means that I can't highlight the part of the audiostream that I want to subtitle.

As you can see in the attached file "Aegisub audio zoom high", the sliders look weird. Also, it's not possible to move them up and down. That means that I can only select to different audio zoom levels:

- The high zoom that you can see in the "Aegisub audio zoom high" file where the width of the audio window is about 1 second in total.
- The low zoom that you can see in the "Aegisub audio zoom low" file where the width of the audio window is about 24 minutes in total.

Both of these two settings are really unpractical to work with. I am therefore hoping that someone can help me out and suggest another way to change the audio zoom level.

Thanks in advance.

Quality issues w/ edits/fades on DVD project.

I've been tasked w/ creating DVDs of a dance recital.
This is actually my third time doing this, but a wrench got thrown into the works.
The recital was filmed w/ a rather nice Sony camera (model number escapes me), and yielded some rather large 50MBps AVCHD files.
I've used AVS2DVD to convert those to MPEG2, using FFMPEG CBR 1-pass at 9MBps bit rate.
They look pretty good at this point, actually.

Where things get a bit tricky is when it comes to editing the files.

I initially used VideoReDo to cut out the dead space and it seemed to stitch everything back together w/ no perceived loss in quality.
I've been using DVDStyler to put it all together, and it works well.
Everything still looks great at this point.

The issue is that the client wants some simple fade out -> fade in effects between the cut sections.
They felt that the abrupt cuts looked a bit jarring, and I tend to agree.
VideoReDo did not have a viable way of doing this, so I wound up trying PowerDirector.

PD has definitely delivered the fades effortlessly, but the overall quality looks appreciably worse than before.
Not very impressed by the output capabilities of PD at this point.

Fine details of the backdrop could be seen from my input files, when viewed in VLC.
These details have been lost when viewing the output from PD.
The dancers look washed out and smudgy.

I'm looking for advice on things that I might be doing wrong/overlooking.

I'm not averse to using a different program to make all the edits/fades, provided that it'll keep the quality on par w/ the input file.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Can't play MP4 from Camera by any player

$

Big problem with AVC1 encoded MP4 files playback in VLC and many other popular Windows players I tried, were the file is recorded with SYSM Camera Monitor in Windows 10 64-bit.

One can view live footage and save audio & video from certain models of WiFi mini-cameras using SYSM Monitor, also known as P2PCamViewer. Its the only package I know that can recognize certain CN made mini WiFi Cam models. It shows camera footage on screen and allows to save it to disk, or manipulate the on-screen picture. It allows to save the muxed audio & video cam footage as generic MP4, AVI, or HKV file type (this one is MP4 proprietary format specific for CN cams). While I can play saved AVI footage, its impossible to play any recordings saved as MP4 or HKV on any software player I tried. Try this MP4 and HKV videos as examples.

I'm not sure if this footage is in fact encoded by the WiFi camera itself based on file format option chosen in SYSM, or encoded by SYSM in Windows. However, CPU load is very small when recording the footage, hinting its probably encoded by the cam itself. Can someone suggest a codec allowing to play this video, and in which player? Latest version of SYSM Monitor comes with basic 200KB size HKV video player, editor, and converter to AVI that plays saved HKV files without problems (despite other players say the HKV file is invalid and doesn't contain any video), but not MP4 player. I prefer to save to MP4 as universally recognized format, but tried various media players, and none can play any MP4 from the cam saved by SYSM.

Any ideas?

PotPlayer playlist confusion

A quick question about playlists. The other day I created a playlist of video cuts, saved it, then later on loaded and started playing it.

While it was running I manually added a couple of tracks in the middle and moved a couple of existing tracks around. However, playback instead stuck to the original order and skipped the added tracks until later.

I expect it to accept the new order immediately after the changes and play the list as displayed. Am I missing a setting?

I see references to the playback queue, and I now assume that a playlist that is loaded gets pushed to this queue, and subsequent changes do not? Is there an easy way to access this queue?

I am the owner of a large collection of VHS cassettes (over 200 pieces) pre-recorded with popular science films, protected by macrovision. I intend to start a project of transferring them to the DVD format, using equipment collected for a few years for this purpose. Please experienced specialists in digital video refreshing for advice and suggestions on how to best connect and use existing ones devices to remove macrovision, FOTA etc. and achieving the best possible quality. I also ask for a proven script avisynth for later editing.

Any command line tool for windows to edit MP4 metadata without remuxing?

Similar to how mkvpropedit can edit mkv metadata without having to remux the file. There has got to be some publicly available tool out there, windows for example can edit mp4 metadata by right clicking on the file and editing them via the Details panel, so i'm sure it's possible

Any ideas? Thanks

Import/export on the left. Original on the right.

Using VDSC. Upon Import, the quality is lost. It's an MP4. Of course the quality is still lost when exporting, since it's exporting the poor quality.

Know of any free video editors that don't do this?

Brought new camera back from America - want to sell & concerned about VAT

Hi all, hope you're doing well.

A few months back I went to America and bought a new camera - an RX 100 VI - on a great deal at a local camera shop to where I was (OH). Now I'm looking to sell it in the UK as it's just not for me as I prefer the bigger and easier to handle chassis' of full sensor DSLRs. I didn't pay VAT on the camera when entering the UK as I don't have the box for the camera, and so selling the camera will be profitable. Should I be worrying about this or just keep my head down? This after tax website says I am in the 40% tax band - will I pay that on the sale? Really not sure what to do here so any help will be much appreciated :)
