Good morning

I dug my old DV camera out of the loft today, and was surprised it still works, my camera is a Panasonic NV-DA1, it uses digital video tapes

I want to download the tapes to my PC (I have Win7 and Win 10 ) I don't have a MAC or any apple device, apart from my phone

I connect my camera to my PC, but it comes up with USB device not recognised

I only have usb sockets on my PC's

I am using the socket at the front of my camera, I think its a firewire socket with a usb plug at the end

I don't know if there are any plugs or cables I can get to connect the camera to my PC's

Can anyone help or give me any advice ?

I have tried to upload pictures of the camera, the cable I am using and the socket/plug on my camera to how what I am up against

has there EVER been a solution to Avidemux's no batch problem?

Since version 2.6, avidemux has removed its own ability to process in batch. Despite what the advertising says, that external executable avi has never worked, ever. not on Windows 7, and afaik not on Win either
Unless somebody knows how to work that thing, in which case im very much obliged.

HDMI cable stole my sanity !

HI

I hope this is the correct category - there are so many !

My Samsung monitor (which I use as a TV) was driven by a Win7 laptop via blue RGB monitor cable - (resolution 1360x768).
Than I swapped the laptop out and installed a Asus Veriton N260g - much tidier & more elegant solution I thought.

Aha, the Veriton has HDMI says I - will be better picture and even less wires dangling out of the back etc etc.

Duly bought HDMI cable, but it sent resolution haywire and picture was much more blocky. 1360x768 res was no longer available.

It set itself to another res saying this was the native res of the monitor. Any other res options I tried, resulted in a small desktop picture in the middle of a large screen. none of which were satisfactory

When forced to revert to original RGB cable, everything was back to normal without input from me. Native (recommended) resolution was back at 1360x768

Just one of the many thing that puzzled me is - how can a monitor be perceived as having different 'native' resolutions ?

Surely HDMI should be a better method than old-school RGB cable ?

Can anyone shed light / offer solution / advice ?

Footage from damaged Blu-ray

From the look of the disc, the dye is completely gone from a small portion. Looks like a fingerprint at first glance. It's right on the edge, and MakeMKV got 95% of the way through, or thereabouts. But on hitting the bad spot, just quit out and deleted the MKV file.

Is there any way I can get the good part of the file off the disc?

60i to 60i output with Avisynth?

I'm trying to edit 60i VHS footage and I usually use QTGMC deinterlacing but I'm curious and I wanted to try having the video output as 60i, not 60p. Why? I don't know.

I've tried
SeparateFields()
Weave()

but it seems to give me a 30p image with combing artifacts.

I also tried DoubleWeave() but does give me a 60p output, also with combing artifacts.

Is there any way to output 60i with Avisynth or FFMpeg or something? Thanks!

Salvage FLV video, several downloads, missing chunks (source disappeared)

Years ago I tried to download a video on C-Span's website (a speech by George Carlin), using StreamTransport and Replay Media Catcher. I tried repeatedly with both softwares but each downloaded file had glitches caused by missing chunks at different spots. I kept 5 FLV files, each one having a different size (from 275635KB to 289770KB). When I went back to the same page months later, the video had been replaced by one of inferior quality, missing a part at the begining and/or end.

In order to complete the video as much as possible, by completing the missing chunks in one file which are not missing in another, I tried WinHex in “synchronize and compare” mode, but it proved excruciatingly tedious, as there are many differences, and it can't be automated, while WinHex's compare feature is not practical at all (for each search a menu has to be opened, a “report” file has to be created, and there's often a random error message saying that it can't write that damn report file, making it even more tedious). WinMerge can compare two files in an automated way and successfully match equal chunks located at different spots / offsets, but only in “text” mode it would seem, not in “binary” mode, so it's not usable either in a case like this. HexWorkshop should be able to compare two files in their entirety in “resynchronizing compare” mode, but it's extremely slow if the “resync window” is set higher than a few hundred bytes (it seems to be freezing without ever completing the analysis).

Is there a better method to perform such a task ?

H.264 for archival and editing - no go?

I'm about to digitize my 50 old mini-DV tapes. I'll be archiving it so I don't need the tapes anymore. But I also want to be able to put edit the footage at a later stage, as nobody like to watch hours of boring video. And I would like to store it in the cloud (Dropbox).

Do I really need to keep it in a lossless format, or would H264/MP4 be fine? It's just amateur recordings fro the 90ies/00ies. I want to maintain a good quality, also after re-encoding it to H264/MP4 after putting together an edited version.

Will I be satisfied with the results of the Elgato USB Analog Video Capture Device? It saves directly to H264/MP4.

Or is it stupid not to archive in a lossless format? Will I notice any real difference in quality, even after editing? I'll need 5-10 TB of harddisk space, if I have to store it in e.g. FV1, and if there isn't any real difference I'd prefer the agility of having the compressed files of a smaller size.

I know this has been discussed before, but I really need an authoritative answer.

Bulk Editing of MKV Metadata

Say I have a bunch of MKV files, and I want to change the language of the audio on track 2 from "und" to "eng", and the name from "Stereo" to "Dolby Digital 2.0" or "AC3 2.0" or something.

Is there an easy way to go about this, rather than having to drag them all into MKVtoolnixGUI and do it manually?

Why is MP4/H.264 good enough for today's video but not for the old video?

Most of today's amateur video is taken on mobile phones and stored as mp4. We happily take this and use it as footage for editing, and the quality is really good.
Why is it that crappy footage that we capture from old analog video becomes even crappier if we use mp4/h.264? Why does it make such a big difference capturing this already crappy video to for instance ProRes? I just made a test and it is obvious that the quality is much better when capturing to a near lossless codec and then using that for editing.

In the below test, "ProRes" the footage was captured in ProRes; while "VideoPro" and "Lars" was captured in MP4 at bitrate 10,000 and 5,000 respectively.
There is a clear difference.

Fast Video Cataloger 6.1 released

"Fast Video Cataloger 6.1 is a video clip management software for 64 bit Windows designed to handle thousands of video files on a standard PC. The program extracts a wall of thumbnail images representing scenes in each video. This provides a visual search through inside video files instead of watching the duration of clips. Each thumbnail doubles as a playable bookmark for that scene and can be enriched with keywords for filtering and searching. Thumbnails can easily be added, removed or annotated with keywords."

New in the 6.1x version of Fast Video Cataloger:
- Create, Edit and playback video playlists combining sections in videos without altering the original video files.
- Store and search extended properties on video thumbnails
- New c# Script support for video clips and playlists

dropping photos into Avidemux video

I am trying to create a video to post online for a rescue group's adoptable dogs. I want to include stills to separate different parts of the video. I have the video, an MP4, and saved the first photo (a jpeg) as an MP4 as well. I opened the video, then tried to Append the jpeg/video, which is what the instructions say to do. I keep getting this error message: Attempt to open D: Avidemux videos/jpeg.mp4 failed! // Something failed when appending
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, and would love a step by step list of how to drop a jpeg in the middle of a video. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Hello everybody,

I'm starting a free-7-day-trial from mubi.com and I'm wondering if there's a tool for downloading (DRM protected?) streams.

For example this: https://mubi.com/it/showing/adoption/watch
Need a login to access.

I'm using yt-dl gui but I'm having no luck with their streams.
Is there any way around this?

Honestech VHS to DVD 5.0 Delux

$

I bought Honestech VHS to DVD 5.0 Delux package years ago and converted bunch of VHS videos to DVD.

I now have some videos of my kids. I am trying to convert to DVDs, but I am having some issues with the following topics. I would appreciate any help on these issues:

1- The videos I am about to convert to DVDs are about 2hrs. However, when I convert them to DVDs at any quality levels, I could not get all 2hrs of video in 4GB DVDs! The maximum for DVDs is about 1 hr 9 min at best quality to 1 ht 13 min at lowest quality. Any suggestions?

2- When I finish burning the edited videos to the DVD, I am not able to remove or delete the last converted video from the "Clip Panel". It says: "Can't delete 'xxxx.mpg'. It is currently being used in the Edit mode or the Burn mode." How do I remove the already burned and copied DVDs from the clip panel?

Thanks a bunch.
Ken

How to optimize video conversion? (H.265)

I would like to know how I can get the most out of the video conversion so that it is the closest thing to the original. The setting default of handbrake with cfr 18 does not convince me. I am testing Xmedia Recode but I don't know what options I should touch to optimize the final result. Could someone with experience give some advice?

ffmpeg how to interpret parameters, documentation?

i use ffmpeg frequently for fairly routine and simple tasks but have found my way into a corner that requires my understanding parameters i've not had to deal with before.

i'm told that ffmpeg currently only supports 10 bit dnxhr. i'm making 12 bit dnxhr, though. finding my way out of this corner will require a greater understanding, on my part, of the options ffmpeg provides. unfortunately, all of the documentation i've found so far either omits detailed explanation of parameters or assumes a prior knowledge of such. examples follow.

is there anything anywhere that explains what things like

yuv444p10le
yuv444p12le
yuv444p16le

actually mean? i can't find it explained anywhere. is this purely ffmpeg nomenclature or is it more widely used in the video world?

also, i'm getting stream info from ffprobe but don't know what some of the info produced means. example:

Stream #0:0(eng): Video: hqx (CHQX / 0x58514843), yuv422p16le(10 bpc, bt709, progressive)

i'm not sure what 10 bpc means or the relationship between 10 bpc and yuv422p16le. i'd love to find someplace that explains how to interpret all the info put out by ffprobe and ffmpeg.

thanks, babag

29.97FPS video with many duplicated frames, convert for YouTube upload

I have a video from which I cut a 14min segment, which I subtitled in order to share it on YouTube.

The framerate is 29.97 FPS, but I can see that there are many duplicated frames (with a totally irregular pattern), and the playback is quite jerky, although there's not a lot of motion (it's a speech by George Carlin recorded by C-Span in 1999). After reading the manual for the FDecimate Avisynth plugin, I counted the number of unique frames over a 10 seconds segment : 139 if I made no mistake, which would mean that the actual framerate is about 14 FPS. First, is it possible that the original footage was recorded at such a low and non-standard framerate ?

In summer 2011 I had recorded that same footage from C-Span's website, which at the time was available as a FLV stream in 704x480 resolution (with a display resolution of 640x480), but despite several attempts with both StreamTransport and ReplayMediaCatcher I couldn't get the whole stream flawlessly, each file had missing chunks at different spots – yesterday I created a thread on that specific issue. The thing is, despite the fact that the video currently available (successfully downloaded with youtube-dl) is in a higher resolution, 768x576, than those files downloaded years ago, I can see that the quality is inferior (significant loss of detail).
Image
[Attachment 49830 - Click to enlarge]
Image
[Attachment 49831 - Click to enlarge]

Also, the framerate of those older files is 22.475 FPS[*], and they don't seem to have duplicated frames, therefore the playback is much smoother. So whoever converted the footage to generate the currently available streams apparently screwed up the framerate big time.

[*] Actually MediaInfo's output is quite confusing :
Code:

Images par seconde                      : 22,862 Im/s
Images/s mini                            : 22,222 Im/s
Images/s maxi                            : 100,000 Im/s
Images/s d'origine                      : 22,475 Im/s

VirtualDub2 reports the framerate as “66.67 FPS” for one of these files but “22.50 FPS” for another.
VLC Media Player reports either “22.475” or “22.500”.

So my options are either :
– using the older files, which all (I kept 5 of them) have missing chunks but may be fixable if I manage to combine them and complete the holes to hopefully regenerate the complete video, with a smooth playback and a decent sharpness ;
– using the recently downloaded file from the currently available stream in 768x576, complete, but with a softer picture, and, more annoyingly, with a jerky playback.

If I go with option 2, is it wise to try to make the playback smoother by decimating the duplicated frames, or will the video be converted again to a standard framerate by YouTube anyway, making any such attempt totally moot ?

By any chance, could there be a better source for this recording available somewhere ?

Excerpt from one of the older downloads (704x480, 22.475 FPS) :
