Best upscaling algorithm ?

$

Hi,
I need help with what algorithm is best to upscale/doubling and encode a video with it. Xmedia has lanczos which is good, but I have heard that NNEDI3 is really good and others like that. I would just like some software that had more upscaling or doubling options and would do a good job exporting it without losing quality. MadVR is fantastic, but you can't encode video files with the specific upscaling/doubling algorithm. It doesn't have to be NNEDI3, but just what is best for upscaling/doubling videos. I mostly just want to upscale a few videos from 480p to 720p, but I want it to look as best as possible.

Gloves

Yes, this topic really is about gloves. I've seen a few references here and at dFAQ to using lint-free cotton gloves when working with magnetic tape, e.g. for inspection or DIY cleaning methods. It's also mentioned in Canada.ca's "Digitization of VHS Video Tapes" technical bulletin.

This led me to a few brands of cotton gloves sold on Amazon.com and labeled "lint free," but all the ones I found are marketed for formal wear and/or general inspection duties, often mentioning coin inspection. Since none of their descriptions or customer reviews list applications related to film work, I did some more searching.

I wound up looking at Archival Methods Cotton Inspection Gloves, marketed as ideal for "safe handling of photographs, negatives, prints, documents, artwork and all kinds of collectibles." They are not, however, labeled lint-free.

Archival Methods also sells "Nylon Lintless Gloves" which are marketed with the statement that using "lint-free gloves is important when handling prints, film & negatives, transparencies, or artwork that might attract lint from cotton gloves." And so it seems I've finally landed on a product made specifically for this type of work, which is of value to me since there may be other aspects of its design besides simply what material its made of, that will be of use. But none of the resources I've been studying for work with magnetic tape mention nylon gloves—only cotton.

So while this isn't an especially fascinating topic, once upon a time I would have likewise considered VCR selection dull and unimportant. The more I learn about working with VHS tapes, the more I realize the details matter. So, for inspecting, and if necessary cleaning some VHS tape, what would you use? I fully understand the answer may be different for inspection vs cleaning and other uses. :)

How to detect "lines" and drop of audio in VHS rip

$

Hello,

I need to move out soon, and I have started to digitize some VHS tapes because I need to get rid of them. Most of them are in surprisingly good condition.
I am using an Elgato USB converter with an old Sony SLV-SE730 player (I also have access to a JVC HR-J780, but it seems to me that the quality is superior with the Sony unit).

Each tape has different recordings from different sources, mostly music performance recorded on TV.
The conversion is working fine, except that I noticed that sometimes, when the source is different the video "jumps", many lines appear on the video and the sound is cracks or mutes (and the Elgato software sometime displays "No signal detected" for a few seconds).
Of course I tried rewind the tape and ripped it again, but the same thing happened. However, if I rewind the video, eject it and put it back in, the player "re-aligns" when you press play, then the playback is smooth or the problematic scene.
So in other words, this is what happens :
- Start playing video
- Music performance 1 (source A) => rip OK
- Music performance 2 (source B) => rip OK
- Music performance 3 (source C) => video "jumps"
- Rewind the tape to beginning of performance 3 (source C)
- Eject the tape
- Put the tape back in and let video player "align"
- Music performance 3 (source C) => rip OK
- Rewind to beginning of tape
- Music performance 1 (source A) => rip OK
- Music performance 2 (source B) => rip OK
- Music performance 3 (source C) => video "jumps"

So the problem seems to be related to the "alignment" done by the Sony video player, since ejecting the tape and re-aligning it fixes the issue. But since 2 recordings from different sources have no issue, the problem is not systematic.
If the tape could be re-aligned at the beginning of each new footage on the tape, the rips would be fine.

My idea was to use a video analysis tool that could detect those "bad scenes" and return when they occur in the video. This way I could check manually on the rip (faster than on the tape) and only re-rip the tapes that actually need it (the bad scene might occur on a recording that has no value - mostly at the end of the video if the tape just kept recording whatever was on TV).

I have 100+ tapes (the shortest are 180 minutes), and they are unlabeled (so I don't know if it's an important family movie or not). I cannot afford to watch them while they are transferring. However, I have dedicated a computer to this task, so I don't mind running time consuming task while I'm at work.

Do you guys have any idea which software could help me detect these "bad scenes" ? Or if you have any better ideas, I am more than happy to hear your suggestions because I am not an expert.

I don't think this is a common problem and couldn't find anything quite similar in the forum.

Thank you so much in advance for your help and suggestions,

Gybe

Back to capturing after a few years ... which gear to keep, which to toss?

Hey, gang. Long time no see. My capturing attempts go back to the AIW 9800 Pro, and reading the wisdom of LordSmurf as gospel. There was a time when I knew a lot. Now I'm 46 and have quit my broadcast career in pursuit of a new, video-based self-employed career. But it's been a few years, so I'm asking for your wisdom to help bring me up to running speed.

My work will involve some amount of media conversion. My current VHS chain is Sony SVO-1630 -> Datavideo TBC-1000 -> Hauppauge HD-PVR, first generation, rev F2.

And in another box, I have a bunch of old Hauppauge MPEG encoder cards. I'm not even sure they'd work on the latest hardware, but in the off chance I've got something here that should really be used instead of the HD-PVR, could you please point it out and tell me why? Otherwise, I'm going to sell the lot of them and keep only fond memories of when rolling your own PVR with BeyondTV was the way to go.

My other, unused capture cards:

Hauppauge WinTV PVR-250 32032 NTSC Ntsc-j PCI TV Tuner (Model 32032 rev b182)
Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150 NTSC/NTSC-J 26582 LF MPEG2 PCI TV Capture Tuner Card (Model 26582 LF rev f0b2)
Hauppauge WinTV WinTV-PVR-150 PCI TV Tuner/Capture Card (Model 26032 rev c199)
Hauppauge WinTV Hvr-2250 Pci-e TV Tuner Video Capture Card (Model 88061 LF rev c4f2)

I have other questions on some other matters, notably a frustrating experience trying to get DV out of a camcorder and into a modern PC, but I'll leave it at this for now. I'm glad this site is still around, and if any of the regulars remember me at all, howdy!

DVDFab Nvidea CUDA GPU Acceleration not enabled on video xfer DVD's

$

Running DVDFab v11, DVD's that were authored from video tape xfers using a standalone recorder do not engage this option in DVDFab.
No apparent problems with DVD movie rips.

I have tried numerous things, all come up dead ends. What makes matters worse is out of 15 or 20 tries with different discs, three recordings actually engaged the GPU acceleration function. Worse yet, one try it was successful, the next try (same recording, same disc, same session), it failed. Obviously it's a problem with the discs, but there is nothing I can do about that. I have probably 30 or so of these I want to convert into mp4's

I have to rule out incompatibilities between my AMD based system and this GTX 1060 video card since it does work with 'regular' DVD's apparently. I have run ATI/AMD graphics cards for probably 15 years or so and decided to upgrade a older R7 260X card with this function being one reason.

So my question is, what would make the program not enable this CUDA function 90+% of the time?
Any other specific details needed, just ask.

Add audio track to Blu-Ray UHD ISO

Hello everybody,

I'm trying to do something I don't know if it's possible. I have a Full 4K UHD movie in ISO format. I want to add a DTS HD audio track to it, keeping the Full format, as I don't want to lose either the menus or Dolby Vision. Is it possible? How can I do it?

Thank you very much.

[Newbie] Green/purple flicker when capturing using AV to USB converter.

Hi,

I have been using a SONY CCD-TR650E PAL Hi8 camcorder with an RCA cable and connecting it through the EasyCap AV to USB converter to my Windows 10 computer. When capturing the Hi8 tape, the footage has horizontal, alternating purple and green lines instead of the normal colour. There are sometimes short (0.1 sec) sequences where the colour returns, but for the most part, it remains as seen here:

https://imgur.com/a/3Tovcxi

Everything else is fine - the audio syncs up nicely and the footage is not generally of bad quality.
The things I have tried:
  • I have used the colour threshold option in VLC - this removes the lines, but it also means I can only watch the footage in black and white (this is probably what I will apply to the footage if I cannot solve the issue)
  • Using different compression methods in virtualdub, changing the audio codec (? not sure if right word), applying de-interlacing in VLC, honestly I have tinkered with everything I can tinker with, I think.
  • I have also tried playing the footage back on my phone to see if it was my computer monitor, but the issue was still present.
  • Changing the tape - this does not work.
  • Using a cleaning casette. This also did not work. I think it may have made the footage look a bit more crisp, actually, but I would not know for sure.

I am considering maybe getting an S-video cable and trying it that way? Do you think it would change the footage?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

i'm on ubuntu and i have created several costum actions in thunar to open mime types with specific applications. i also want to do this with matroska files and the mkvpropedit gui. the command to start it is 'mkvpropedit' but thats only the command line version, gut the gui. mkvpropedit --gui-mode filename doesn't work, there is the error "nothing to do". The only way i know is to open mkvtoolnix-gui and then go to the header editor. i want to open files directly in the editor.

Completely purge VirtualDub from PC (including configuration files) or...

$

Hey,

I'm having some issues with VirtualDub and I've ran out of ideas. Let me try to explain what is going on.

Why am i trying to purge VirtualDub?
I'm trying to purge my VirtualDub in order to get a fresh start. I know that removing it is just a matter of deleting one folder but I'm trying to force it to have a fresh start in order to accomplish something that used to work on my PC and now doesn't want to.

What am I trying to do?
I'm having issues with capturing AVI from my VHS player through some EasyCap device (it figures as OEM device in device manager and in VD). It used to work before but at some point I stumbled upon some issues. I've tried deleting VirtualDub folder and downloading it again but it doesn't work on my PC. I've tried downloading it on my laptop and everything is fine. I guess maybe there are some hidden configuration files that could be deleted to get really fresh start?

What happened?
Everything started when I created a capture file that I wasn't pleased with. I forgot to stop the capture and it got unnecessarily big. I deleted it from my drive before stopping the capture in VD. It probably was a bad idea. Then, anytime that I try to capture the signal with VD there seems to be no signal from OEM device. Even in some other application that could see it. If I unplug the OEM device and plug it again the signal is present in that other app. When I open VD and try to capture it, it goes black.

Why don't use that other application then?
Well, it's capable of saving only uncompressed files and it's terrible. VirtualDub is awesome at this and I would be very glad if I could get it working again without reinstalling the whole system (which is what I'm probably going to do if everything else fails).

Thanks for reading this. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, I checked the address and the check boxes for notification.

I don't block anything, messages my ISP (Spectrum) ID's as 'Spam' (usually incorrectly) are sent, marked as spam in the heading. They are not blocked here. I have checked their web site to see if anything is placed elsewhere, but not so.

Picture "squeezed" in Virtualdub

$

When capturing miniDV from a camcorder to Virtualdub there is a vertical black bar (22 px) on the right and a horizontal on the bottom (8 px).

Also, the picture looks a little distorted, like it's squeezed a bit, the faces are a little narrow.

Now I'm just cropping out the black bars. But actually, the right thing would be to get rid of the black bars and let the picture fill the full picture. Then I wouldn't have to crop, and it wouldn't be distorted, I guess.

How can I achieve this?

I've attached photo of the captured image and how it looks on the camcorder screen.

Trying to match original format in Vegas

$

I'm working on a project in Vegas 15 and have been using some large AVCHD files.
I've made the edits and would like to save them as closely as possible, to their original format.

My intent is to add the resultant files to DVD Styler and use that for the rendering/resizing, as I've had very good luck w/ that in the past.

Here's what I've got according to MediaInfo.
There are actually 4 audio tracks, which have the same specs as the one listed below. The rest were left out of the posting for space concerns.

Thanks for any insight.

Subtitle problem

Hello :

I'm pretty new to working with video files, so please excuse me if my question seems stupid. I have a 1080p BlueRay .mp4 file of a Japanese film that comes with English subs in the form of an .srt file. The .mp4 file by itself is ~2.88G. When I meld the .mp4 and .srt files with both Any Video Converter and Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate I end up with a 10G file. (I use those two programs because they allow me to change the font size and color.)

Is there a way by which I can combine video and subtitle files without a major increase in file size, and retain quality? Any assistance would be much appreciate -- but please remember I'm a hopeless newbie. Thanks.

Screen Capture Questions

Hello, dear all.

When we can't download certain video material or certain site, we can always use screen capture "method", using programs like OBS Studio?

Yes, I know that such cases we lose significant quality in video and audio.

But does exist some sites that such thing is not possible? I mean: screen capture is useless or impossible to be done.

For those sites we must to use programs like PlayOn? For those cases, does not exist freeware programs or "methods" to deal with such issues?

Thanks.

Best regards.

Ripping subtitles from medici.tv as .srt

Hello

I downloaded a documentary from medici.tv with youtube-dl GUI and it worked well.

Now I'm trying to rip subtitles from the same docu (they are splitted into many .webvtt segments) using Firefox and activate developer mode to inspect element. Then head to Network tab to find and search for: 'subtitles' or 'm3u8'.

What I get is a file of about 70 KB with .mp4 container.
I opened the file with notepad and this is the (partial) content:

Under Windows 7 64-bit I noticed that USB 3.0 transfers are slow (to external USB 3.0 HDDs connected to the motherboard USB 3.0 ports). USB 3.0 drivers are installed. The motherboard is using Intel Z97 chipset. I had this problem before with an even older motherboard, but I never really found a solution. Any ideas what might be the problem?

With a Samsung LU28E590DS monitor and an ASRock Radeon RX560 4GB graphics card and when opening, moving, closing windows in Windows 7 64-bit, there is often screen corruption (for example windows don't disappear completely when closing, but desktop needs to be refreshed etc). The latest drivers from AMD are installed. The monitor's response time was changed to fastest with no difference and graphics drivers are using default values. Any ideas what might be causing this?

I've been using 4K Video Downloader to download videos from YouTube, but there's a noticeable drop in quality compared to the original upload, like increased pixelation, slight colour loss and not as sharp, more blurry, general degradation of detail. Is there a better piece of software or website that lets you download in it's original quality (or close to?)

Or would i get better results using screen capture software?

I am new here, a long time user of XMedia Recode, however for the last 2 weeks I have an odd problem where, when I double click the XMR shortcut, the little splash progress window barely shows up 2 seconds then vanishes. Double click again, same results and on... At this point I uninstall and reinstall XMR, which usually gets me working for a session or two, then it goes back to not opening again.

In the last 2 weeks, I must have reinstalled XMR a dozen time at least. While I have a x64 system (and normally use the x64 version, I also tried the 32 bits and portable versions, but they all fail to open after a session or two.

I have searched about this issue to no avail.
Do you have any ideas?

Hello I have a new PC with an Nvidia 2060 Super video card and a BenQ EL2870U monitor, both of which can do 4k with HDR.

I am seeking advice on how to test it out, under Win10x64 (with HDR turned on in windows settings) and display clips of 4k with HDR,
and in particular which media player to use.

I have tried MPC-HC with clips downloaded from http://hdr4k.blogspot.com/ however they appear washed-out indicating some sort of tonemappng issue.
Both Windows Media Player in Win10 and also Win10 "Films and TV" refuse to open and play the video in the mkv clips.

So, suggestions welcomed.

Thank you in advance.

edit:
Video clip from here: https://www.engadget.com/2019/01/27/hdr-setup-explainer/ in particular: https://youtu.be/tO01J-M3g0U
(Win10 "Films and TV" seems to play this one nicely).
