Compression for long term storage

$

Hello folks,

I did some video editing, conversions in the past but for the last decade or so, life has taken over and don't have time for it. So I am aware of this stuff but not much in the last few years.

Lately, I have been making a lot of videos of kids activities. Due to everything being 1080p, the video sizes are big. While storage is cheap, I don't want to gather loads of hard drives, make multiple copies just to realize that something failed when I tried to access it. I was thinking of compressing the videos best quality possible and make a couple of local copies and one copy on the web with a dedicated (paid) backup solution.

I have used HandBrake with its presets, never went beyond that as the results were satisfactory, and was also keeping the original file. Now the local copies will be deleted so I need to make sure that the results are best I can get.
Other option I thought, I could upload to YouTube, make it private, download the YouTube compressed video and delete it from YouTube. (Don't want to use it for storage.) I am aware of the fact that VP9 format is not as supported as H.264

What would be your solution, if you were in my shoes?

Thanks in advance.

Highest quality deck for capturing D-3 tapes

Hi All,
Hopefully all you "old timers" (or any age that like a challenge) will help me out here as I need to capture about 40 films that are stored on D-3 tapes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-3_(video). Here is what I know.
1. The video deck that was developed at the time (1991) was the Panasonic AJ-D360 , which is a composite video deck . here are some links to current decks https://www.ebay.com/itm/PANASONIC-AJ-D350-D3-NTSC-VIDEO-CASSETTE-RECORDER/26428813243...4AAOSweuBct9Rt

2. The D-5 was the "newer" model and according to wikipedia "it is an uncompressed digital component system (10-bit), but uses the same half-inch tapes as Panasonic's digital composite D-3 format." There are many panasonic D-5 decks including the AJ-HD3700B available. These are video decks that I can find but after talking to video rental companies the big question of whether a D-3 can play on a D-5 machine is uncertain and mixed answers. I've heard that their was a special, expensive D-5 model that allowed for this and big companies like Warner Bros and possibly BBC had these. But seems the D-3 tape and d-5 tape size are the same and a couple of people said "it might work". Not sure why I cannot use the HD3700. The big advantage of using a D-5 deck is that their is a SDI HD out port that will increase the quality

3. Anyone have any experience or thoughts on how to play/capture content from a 1/2 inch D-3 tape using a Panasonic (or other) D-5 deck?

Thank you very, very much!! rg

Dithering of Video in Pinnacle Studio 19

$

Its hard to describe this problem but here goes-

I have inserted a video produced with my Canon EOS 70D into a DVD I am producing. The video is of a distance shot over a lake where I pan across the scene.

Houses on the far shoreline dither/shake as the scene pans across.

The raw video is perfect when viewed on a large screen so the problem is not with the camera. Also. in Pinnacle Studio 'Author'; if I play the scene at full screen is it also fine. The problem therefore seems to be when I burn the DVD. PAL format.

Any suggestion as to how I can resolve this issue?

Thanks

  • -qp-file: path to qp file that gets used when '-use-q-file' is used, no clue about the syntax of the file.

  • -nch: 'NumberOfChannels' no clue

-> does anyone use the svt hevc encoder and can shed some light on the parameters/options or knows a decent documentation of the encoder?
Like you can see I'm mainly lost with all these options. :)

Am new to streaming so have asked friends about free video streaming sites.

Was sent a review for XMovies8 "XMOVIES8: WATCH FREE MOVIES ONLINE & TV SERIES IN HIGH QUALITY" https://xmovies8.pressbooks.com/chapter/chapter-1/

Have no problem to watch but 4K Video DL does not work on this site.

Hope someone has a portable dl app that will.

Bad News for the DIY crowd and electronics customers

I was just at my favored Fry's location, and it was something of a shock. I've never seen so many of their shelves bare before. Anyone going in to find particular items from their weekly ads would have been puzzled, and would have left empty-handed. So I asked what the problem was, and might this be a sign that they were about to go out of business ? (We do know that Amazon has just been killing off various competitors right & left.) They said 'No', it's just that they were in a major process of changing vendors and distribution. Should all get sorted out within a month, they said. But I had my doubts.

Having bare shelves this close to the holidays can't be a good thing, for any business that is striving to remain viable. One could always order from their online unit, but that cuts out browsing, impulse buys, and a lot of other things driving a bottom line.

The other weird thing I noticed from my recent visit was that they were running a skeleton crew. Hardly any of the usual personnel to be seen, and just a couple cashiers. First time I EVER found no employee at the door on the way OUT, insisting on inspecting your receipt, and drawing that blue marker line across it !

Almost no one else has anything close to their selection of in-store electronics items that you can browse. I've also picked up some components that can be used for the pinball machines there, all manner of computer stuff, some office supplies, etc. I'd hate to lose them as an option.

Then, a quick check online turned up

https://www.tweaktown.com/news/67191/frys-electronics-stores-soon-close-seeing-same-fa...rus/index.html

which tends to support my worst thoughts about this.

I'm now thinking that that "official" story they gave me by way of explanation -- an interim change of vendors and distribution channels -- was entirely bullshit ! Trying to put a brave face on things, for the public.

It wouldn't surprise me if the sales associates that I knew there in a few departments (like the networking dept., or the TV dept.) had all been given their walking papers. Some of them were good -- at least at this location -- and had been there for many years.

The thing is, our options continue shrinking. In those few (office) categories that overlap, if you go to Office Depot or Staples instead -- and those two have closed a lot of stores also, relative to what once was -- what you were looking for usually costs notably more. For example, my favorite 22 lb. bond that I use in various printers was no longer stocked by anyone else. Frys had it in stock sporadically, for $8. / 500 sheet pack. OD can order it, but will charge $15. for the same pack. Best Buy may soldier on, as I think they may have sounder financial underpinnings. (?) For computer stuff and general electronics, it could soon be that Micro Centre is the last man standing . . . ?

VirtualDub 2 pane layout, no stretch?

Hi, I'm considering moving over to VirtualDub2 after quite a few years with VirtualDub 1.9.11.
There's a frustrating issue with the interface that should be obvious to fix, but I just can't figure out where the setting is.
In VirtualDub 1.9, the video stretches to fit the pane size. In VirtualDub 2 it crops the video, either centered or top left. See attachment.
Is there really no setting to use the old style?

I do a lot of tinkering with deinterlacing, cropping, rescaling, that kind of stuff. Fiddly geometric stuff that often shouldn't be cropped (in interface) and needs a lot of vertical space without regards to aspect ratio.
On my quests to fix horribly broken videos I've ended up with resolutions that are *5120x180*, and they're absolutely invisible if I can't scale them vertically.
(Loooots of field unfolding, you can read the nightmare at the bottom of the post.)
It's real hard to see what's supposed to be 1,78:1 video when it's assumed to be square-pixel 28,44:1!

In case you're wondering what nightmare project this is, although it probably belongs in a separate thread:

I have video scaled from 1920x1080i25 video to 1280x720p25 without deinterlacing first!
Lines 1 and 2 are blended from both fields by a ratio of ~75% bottom field and ~25% top field, and lines 3/4 are blended 75/25% top/bottom (it repeats for all lines).
It looks interlaced/combed, but since the lines are actually 2 by 2 instead of single lines it obviously can't be deinterlaced correctly. If deinterlacing (YADIF 2x) could be done 2 by 2 lines, you would get (almost) 720p50, with just 25% of the other field blended through. To my logic that seems the absolute most you could get.

Now
(1280x720@25)
Line 1: Second field
Line 2: Second field
Line 3: First field
Line 4: First field
And so on.

The result should be (might be):
(1280x720@50)
First frame:
Line 1: Interpolated
Line 2: Interpolated
Line 3: First field
Line 4: First field
Second frame:
Line 1: Second field
Line 2: Second field
Line 3: Interpolated
Line 4: Interpolated
And so on.

I've gotten to 1280x360p50 (anamorphic) by just downscaling and deinterlacing, but that has unnecessary resolution loss. Nothing's ever good enough for me.
So far I feel like I'm *most* of the way to getting to 1280x720p50, albeit with twice the temporal blur and lots of combing, so I'm not quite there yet.

I ended up with a video at 5120x180 by unfolding the "fields" twice, to separate the 2 by 2 fields completely. The goal is to interpolate the missing "fields" line by line, almost like YADIF 2x, and refold the mess into almost 720p50.

Filter stack mess thus far:
interpolate x2 (could go wherever)
deinterlace, unfold, keep bottom
deinterlace, unfold, keep bottom
deinterlace, fold, keep top
deinterlace, fold, keep top.

I'm missing some clever filter to offset two of four lines by 1 frame, my best option right now is to render the video out after the two unfolds, split it in two, join them back together with one half offset in time by 1 frame, and then refold twice.

I believe VirtualDub2 might slightly simplify some of this...

Oh, and if it works, I have ideas for doing this to 480i/576i mess ups later, which for the same reason repeats a (wavy-lines) pattern every 30 lines...

Audio rate not working ffmpeg

$

Is anyone having problems converting audio sample rate to a different rate with the latest ffmpegs? I tried changing AAC audio rate from 25k to 44.1K
ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -r:a 44.1k -b:a 129k output.mp4
It accepts it but does not change it.

The only combination that works is:
ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -ar 44.1k -ab 129k output.mp4 does not change audio sample rate

I searched the internet but could not find where the attributes had been exclusively changed. Video codec still takes -b:v, -bv, and -b ???

UOP: Cannot Remove

I ripped a particular disk, (The Night Manager - BBC), it is 6 episodes on 2 disks, so I ripped the full disks (as iso's). Problem (nuisance mainly), with this one is I cannot remove the 'user operation prohibition' re fbi/homeland sec/some brit same-o warnings.

Using Redfox latest version.

Redfox removes this (uop's) on like 99% of disks, but not this one.

Ideas??

Like I said its mainly a nuisance, if I click on my media players 'jump to menu' button, it starts over at begining of 'warning' Fast forward does nothing. Most rips, either warning is removed or fast forwarding works.

-c-

btw, it is a most excellent vid to watch!

Need help with PAL deinterlacing

I need some help with some PAL video. I used MeGUI to index the mpg file and analyze it. MeGUI says it's progressive and when I search through the clip I can't find any signs of interlacing either. When I transcode to avi it's interlaced and not progressive.

I've tried Lagarith and MagicYUV both of which come out interlaced.
TDeint(mode=1) gives me a progressive output, but at double the framerate

I'm not experienced enough to figure this out on my own and would like some help.

Thanx in advance.

I've posted a few times across various websites in an attempt to identify what this is on my VHS tape. I'm a tad paranoid when it comes to mold, as you see. Anyway, I stupidly inserted this VHS tape inside my expensive SVHS VCR multiple times, and have rewound and unwound the tape (unknowing that there could be potential mold on my beloved AC DC tape).

Do you think the VHS tape contains mold or dust? Is my VCR pretty much done for? I've seen severe cases of mold, and most have noted that vhs mold typically looks powdery or like dandelion specks. I've already digitalized this tape in a lossless format via Virtualdub luckily. The tape itself looked pretty good to me when watching it.

Checking for Damaged, Corrupt or the Integrity of MKV files.

I have 1500 Files (35TB) of Movies (all in mkv format) and due to a faulty server I had to change the location of my files while transferring the files one of the RAID drives (RAID 0) became foreign state. Although using robocopy the movie directories in the new server shows the same amount of files and the same size. I believe some of my MKV files have been damaged - problem is, i don't know which, i just know there's some. So checking them one by one will take a long time.

The issues I'm noticing, are:
- Video glitches (colors getting messed up and picture not 'updating')
- Playback stops (i.e. stops in the middle of playback)
- Duration is messed up (i.e.: supposed to be 1h30m, but is only 20m)

So I need some way to scan them all for errors.

I thought remuxing the movies would show me the errors. But I don't know how to use a batch file to do that.

I have MKVtoolnix installed in the directory: C:\Program Files\MKVToolNix\mkvmerge.exe
I have the Movies in the folder H:\Shares\Cinema1. and all the movies are in their respective subfolders.

I had also learnt on the net that eac3to could check the files for any damages. Is that an option.

Could anyone please guide me.

Thanks you

JVC SVHS Heads, are PDM2119A and PDM2119C the same ?

I'm interested in getting new heads for an HR-S5800. Reason is while it doesn't have a TBC et all (dynamic drum system etc...), the transport and electronics on these produced the best image I've seen on some tapes, not so good on others TBH.
I've stumbled across part PDM2119C on the SM but only found PDM2119A. Could those be the same but different names for different decks ?

NTSC to NTSC

I'm in Australia and have a 240-v NEC NTSC Playback vcr connected to a Sony Bravia NTSC tv I brought from the U.S. Via an adapter, the tv's power is 19.5 v DC from 240-v 50-Hz line current. Playback of U.S. VHS tapes produces black and white video only. Silly me, I assumed an "NTSC" vcr could play NTSC VHS tapes to an NTSC tv. Can anyone explain why the video is only black and white?

Unicode in avisynth

I have some videos with unicode filenames which avisynth won't work with unless I change the filename. There aren't many but they are spread randomly throughout 1000 videos and they keep messing up my workflow as several apps besides avisynth also have problems with unicode. Is there a way to isolate these files in a different folder or a program that can autoconvert unicode characters to the nearest ANSI one?

Why would VSDC omit certain recorded words only when pitch is changed?

It's so strange, the audio file has it, but when previewed with the pitch heightened this word is a blank, and only this one despite the pitch changing for everything else too...

Cable TV queston.

Greetings from Thailand. I subscribe to an old style analog co-axial cable system and the head end is about 25 miles away. It costs about $10 per month. There are 50 channels available but only 12 have English language programing.

A couple of the channels come in crystal clear... perfect. The rest vary from moderate snow to totally unwatchable.

When I complain, a tech guy comes out and says there must be a bad connection and they replace the wire to the street. No improvement.

My question is: Don't the two or three crystal clear channels prove the cable itself is OK? How can a loose/corroded connection affect channels differently?

Thanks for your time.

How to add four black bars

Hello everyone

I recently replaced my old 0.5K television with a "smart" 4K television, but unfortunately it doesn't have the option to "zoom out", and always stretches any video to fill as much of the screen as possible. This means that old videos of mine that look okay when they are small, look unwatchable on the new television, unless I position myself 10 meters from the screen. I can watch these videos on my computer using e.g. VLC Player and disable stretching. But I would like to watch them on the television.

So I suspect one solution is to add black bars to the tops and sides of the video. Here is an example of what I'm trying to achieve:

With four manually added black bars: https://youtu.be/Wp5BvdHB2rQ
Without any manually added black bars: https://youtu.be/Nsxotct-vXE
(the examples don't play smoothly because I mimicked the desired effect using a screen recorder)

Unfortunately all of the tutorials on "adding black bars" that I can find on the web simply cover the top and bottom of the image with black blocks, and I can't think of any reason why anyone would want that (not me, in any case).

Do you know of free or cheap utilities that can accomplish this?

Thanks
Samuel

Merge MP4 with PowerPoint slides without re-encoding?

Hello,

Considering it takes hours on my slow workstation to render a 1-2 hour video simply to overlay a few slides in a second video track… I was wondering: Provided the slides have the same width+height as the video, wouldn't it be possible to insert the slides at keyframes, and simply merge the two without needlessly re-encoding the whole thing?

Thank you.
