Extract avidemux encoding settings from existing video file

Hi, I usually have three MOV files (registered with my Nikon D3500) that I want to join together in one mp4 file. I am able to doing so with Adobe Premiere Pro, and it takes about 15 minutes. Considering that my trial period is about to finish, I decided to go with Avidemux. How can I figure out the encoding settings that Premiere use in order to obtain the exact result with Avidemux (same file size: ~3.6GB for a 50min video; same time taken to encode)?
In premiere I simply take my three MOV file, I drop it on the time line, and I export the video using the default "Match Source - High bitrate" option.

I also downloaded MediaInfo to obtain all possible information about the output file produced by Premiere:

.mp4 cant play on WMplayer. Tried to change container and work. How to bat?

Hi everyone,

I have some .mp4 files which are not playing in Windows Media Player(Error: Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file), but does play in VLC. I tried to change the container from .mp4 to .flv using a .bat* and after i changed it back to .mp4 and the file started playing normally without the error message. Does anyone have an idea of what it might be or how I can write a a command fot batch convertion that changes the containers in all folders and them change ir back to .mp4 and save in another folder (or will I have to do folder by folder?)

I used ffmpeg and the command i put in the batch file was:

the firtst .bat: to change the container from .mp4 to another container(i choose .flv)

for %%a in ("*.mp4") do ffmpeg -i "%%a" -vcodec copy -acodec copy "%%~na.flv"
pause

the second .bat: to change back to .mp4:

for %%a in ("*.flv") do ffmpeg -i "%%a" -vcodec copy -acodec copy "%%~na.mp4"
pause

I wrote this on notepad and then saved .bat. After changing all files i wrote the way back.

I dont know exactly what it does, but i know it fixes any issues.

Can someone help me to write it better and make it work with the whole directory and then save it to another directory to not overwrite the older files?

Thanks!

Clarification on AVR and HDMI

I'm looking to update some equipment. The first thing will be my AVR because of new decoders, Bluetooth, etc. I don't
need anything fancy, just 5.1 channel like the Denon AVRS540BT or Pioneer VSX-534. But my Sony TV still works well and
I may wait awhile before buying new. It is HDMI but not ARC. All the online manuals I've read so far say I will need a
separate optical or coax cable for surround sound from my Roku and Blu Ray player even thought the HDMI signal is going
through the AVR. On other forums I've read that new AVR's (e.g. Denon's) have "repeaters" (??) built-in that will extract the
audio as the signal goes through the unit so you don't need the separate cables.

Can anyone explain this in simple terms, please?

Advice on converting UK TV Channel5HD freeview videos & finding current br?

$

Hi people
I have ben recording a load of kid's TV shows from CHannel 5 HD in the UK via my HDHomerun. Due to an ongoing issue with the Amazon Fire 4k stick it can't play these videos back (the same problem is in the HDHomerun app, Plex and Emby - it's been an issue with some UK HD broadcasts for a while and not yet fixed in a firmware upgrade).

Anyhoo, now that I have these recordings I have been using Avidemux to just top and tail them (to take out the ads) and save as mp4, but I'd like to convert them all to a video format that will work with the 4k stick - my Android TV and Shield TV in other rooms play them all with no problems, but we have one TV that has the Stick and that's the one my daughter watches most.

The issue is, I can't seem to find what the bitrates of the originals are things like VLC, Mediainfo, etc just show it like this;

Basically, I want to keep them in as close to the original capture quality, but to play on all devices. Also, it would be handy to be able to drop a load in together for a batch conversion (I have a few hundred to do!)

Thanks!

Relationship Between CLEF and CLAP Atoms in QT

CLEF and CLAP atoms in Quicktime files have a similar purpose as it relates to the display dimensions of a video image. Can someone clarify for me the relationship between these two atoms? How does a media player know which one to use as the reference for display dimensions?

Hi!

I was just wondering about this. It has pretty major multimedia related features, screenshot taking, screencasting. I never used it for anything else to be honest.

Speaking of... I'm surprised there's no section in the forum for screen recording, snapshot taking. This is exactly a forum where I would expect to see such.

BD3D2MK3D with manual AviSynth script

I am trying to convert for the first time a 3D BluRay. While BD3D2MK3D can do it effectively, I'm looking for a way to plug in a custom AviSynth script in the process (I have need of running a couple filters on the source). I did not see a way to do it, can this be done?

If not, where can I read about the process BD3D2MK3D relies on, so that I can replicate it manually?

Recoding huge DVD+video archive to HEVC - advice on ffmpeg settings + Card?

$
0
0
As it says in the title, since the 1980s I've accumulated about 10TB of mixed videos, past rips, and home movies on my file server, as well as DVDs. Looking at them now, about 6 TB of them (~30 days actual play time) are large files at ridiculously high bitrates that I just don't need. A quick calculation suggests that if I recode all files with > 150MB and > 2500 kbps video, to 2000 kbps HEVC, and rip all DVDs I haven't yet ripped, at the same video bitrate, I'll save about 1.2TB of file space, which is quite a lot for me and worth it.

I use a mix of FreeBSD and Windows (including Windows Server), and because HEVC is sloowwwww, I have not one, but 3 decent machines I can split the files across and run 24/7, to cut the time right down. (One of these machines would be a background task on my mostly-idle FreeBSD server, the other 2 are unused machines and can run ffmpeg under FreeBSD or Windows). I've already ripped the physical DVDs to disk as .VOB's and .TS, in preparation. My tool of choice is ffmpeg x64 CLI.

I'd like it ideally done within about a week, if possible, or 2 at most. But at the monent I'm getting about 0.1x ~ 0.3x, even after moving from "slower" to "slow". Probably because there's no graphics cards or encoder hardware assist in any of these three machines.

So I'm posting to ask advice on 2 aspects:

1) What hardware might help to seriously accelerate HEVC encoding?

Ideally I'd like at least one option that will also work with ffmpeg on FreeBSD, because that wqay I can also do any future conversions on my file server from console. But mostly it's a one-off task, so cheapest is best, and if that means Windows for driver availability thats okay.

Also what I've read, suggests that hardware HEVC encoding acceleration can be a problem, because the options supported by cards are seriously limited compared to those supported by software. I might need 10 bit not 8 bit, or specific colour spaces - I don't know what settings I need. if the card doesn't support them, I don't know how big a deal it is. Insight and card advice needed badly :)

My available hardware platforms (all use motherboard VGA, none have builtin graphics):
  • File server = Xeon E5-1620 v4 (4 core+HT, 3.5GHz, haswell generation), 256 GB 2400 MHz RAM. (FreeBSD only)
  • Spare #1 = Xeon E5-1680 v4 (8 core+HT, 3.4 GHz, Haswell generation), 128 GB 2400 MHz RAM. (FreeBSD or Windows)
  • Spare #2 = Intel i5-2300 (4 core, 2.8 GHz + turbo, Sandy Bridge generation), 8 GB 1600 MHz RAM but can add more or faster. (FreeBSD or Windows)

2) Are there any specific settings or formats that I am strongly recommended to use, or that the card needs to support?

The files are a complete mishmash of existing formats and rips over the years, going back to the 1990s, off many devices, codecs, containers and sources, so I'd like to pick one format that will generally deliver well, wherever I go in future. I'm happy to use HEVC for all of it, regardless. No reason not to, easier to write the script. I've historically used mp4 for max portability but finding of course that most subtitle streams need converting to text_mov, which I know nothing about. Also there's some subtleties with HEVC options, which I don't know much about either.

My current command I'm trialling is: ffmpeg -i {FILENAME} -map 0 -c:a copy -c:s copy -c:v libx265 -preset slower -b:v 2000k {FILENAME}.RECODED.mp4

I've run 1 pass simply because 2 pass doubles the time, for uncertain quality benefits. I also now know I need to add -c:s text_mov for mp4. But I've seen stuff about using 10 bit not 8 for HEVC, and stuff about using -pix_fmt yuv422p10 or similar for compatibility and best colour spaces, and I don't have a clue if those are significant benefits, or what exactly is best. In fact I don't even know if mp4 is still the most widely supported format (I'd like to never have to recode again, so I want widest support, hence unsure if I want to use mkv for example). So my settings questions are:
  • In 2019 is mp4 still "acceptable" and should I still use it? If not, what is more widely fully supported, and what issues does mp4 have that I could avoid?
  • My subtitles contain formatting and unicode/non-English characters. What args/containers/formats to use?
  • 8 bit or 10 bit? Add -pix_fmt or not, and which one? Any other args that are recommended?

SUMMARY

As you can see, its a bit of a messy question, because I need to consider both hardware acceleration cards, and software args, not just one or the other. Encoding really isn't my skill area, so any advice or information from the many gurus and enthusiasts here, would be so appreciated! :)

Why are ALL optical drives now vertical?

$

I understand putting vertical optical drives in cases that are too narrow for horizontal drives but I see plenty of new computers that are more than wide enough for a horizontal optical drive. Also, every new case that I've seen has room for exactly one optical drive. If you want to have two drives in your computer you're out of luck.

I understand that new drives have ways to hold in disks. Old ones do not. I have old drives and a new computer. The vertical drive failed from the start and I would like to put my blu-ray RW drive in the computer. Nope. My old drives are now useless.

My question is why does anybody think that all drives must be vertical? Why NOT put horizontal drives in cases wide enough to hold them? I suspect that somebody decided that it's pretty or cool or edgy to have the drive vertical and everybody else is following along.

I searched for "why" and found nothing. There's plenty about how to use vertical drives but I have found zero posts about WHY to do this.

Puzzling problem regarding an mp4 file

I've got a holiday mp4 video which plays ok in VLC Media player but nowhere else. If I open it in WMP it plays audio only but not video. If I try and open in AVS Video Converter it says "Contains no video data" and if I try with Mercalli, to stabilise the video, I get "Unsupported Video Format". What is going on?

Any advice gratefull received.

SECAM-L VHS: TBC alternatives?

$
0
0
SECAM-L VHS capturing project:

I've ordered the following VCRs from a couple of French sources:

Combi Lecteur VHS DVD LG DVS7700
Magnétoscope SONY SLV-SE720

I understand that straight TBC devices are hard to come by and some are choosing to obtain VHS/DVD combo units which can serve as TBCs. E.g.: Panasonic DMR-ES10.

Here's my questions:

1. Any VHS/DVD combo units which can a.) serve as a TBC for pass-through, and b.) support a SECAM-L for the pass-through?

2. The LG DVS7700 appears to be a DVD player.

3. On the box for a tape I am looking to capture, it actually says SECAM. But I've read in other threads & forums that there are no actual SECAM tapes? Is this true? Thus even though the tape I'm looking to capture says SECAM on the box it's really just a PAL VHS cassette?

4. I'm poking around some of the French sale sites and I see a small number of VHS DVD combo units which can actually burn DVDs - a key to such units having some TBC function? But it's fairly hard to check to see which will allow the proper workflow: Playing a VHS tape from Franch which says SECAM on the box (but which might be PAL because SECAM was only broadcast). Having some TBC function to deal with the signal. Capturing device on my computer.

5. Anyway I don't know what a European equivalent is of a DMR-ES10 which can handle this SECAM (PAL?) VHS cassette from France, to perform the TBC function.

6. Are any of the USB capture devices reasonable? This one claims to support SECAM & PAL: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0029U2YSA/

Thanks.
