Hi Guys

I've been using Pot Player for a couple of months now and quite like it.

Is there a way to change the colour of the On Sceen Display messages that come up when you fast forward etc. I have looked every where but cannot see any references to this.

At present they are a dark blue.

Common audio encoder quality comparison

Tested few common audio formats by phase cancellation method to grade the quality of audio compressions. It is known that the psychoacoustics model of compression does not allow to conclude the quality of encode by the quantity of data thrown out rather by what quality of data is thrown out. Theoretically a 128 Kbps mp3 file recoded to 160 kpbs should not lose any data for compression, but practically that does not happen.

So I feel when it comes to judging the quality of sound, eyes are more better than ears for inference! ABX listening tests may not be very reliable.

The method of phase cancellation method is well known yet am mentioning it for ready reference. Everybody can perform it in their own system. In a nutshell I will say the encoded waveform should be mixed with the inverse of the actual waveform to know the difference of data left out. Here are the details

In adobe audition multitrack view (or any other sound editor) when the source and encoded are viewed there is a small sync difference. For proper mixing I introduced manually a crust in waveform as an anchor point in the very beginning of the file.
The waveform are now synched by cutting a small portion towards the left of the encoded waveform and moving the crust to match the position of the original waveform. In the fourth image, the vertical bar shows the position the cut was made in the encoded waveform.

Having inverted the source in single track view (Edit View) by Effects->Invert and return to multitrack view Edit-Mixdown to file (all audio clips) is all one needs to do to find out the difference of data thrown out

As an alternative one can have the copy of INVERTED source file in the first track and original source file in the third track and save the document. The encoded file will be placed in the second track and after synching the audio with the third track source as mentioned above, the actual source can be deleted and the mix made and screenshot taken and the audio document reverted for placing the other encoded file in the second track(if necessary). For perfect encodes like wma, ogg, lame mp3 the original file can be opened and edit->mixpaste with invert of the encoded file as shown in the fifth image.

I did not wish to encode any file below 128 Kbps because even good encoders performed only marginally better compared to 128 bit mp3 files. With AAC HE high efficiency mode I could not match the crust of encoded file and hence did not consider it – probably they don’t compress well.

I feel helix mp3 at 320 is the best codec considering the quality of encode and ubiquitous nature of mp3 .
CBR is always better than VBR

The images that you are viewing is the cropped image of left channel (the right being similar is not considered) stacked one above other for easy inference. The images are almost in alignment with other images and can be visually compared to-and-fro in image viewer. Unable to upload lot of files and hence attaching a zipped version.

AG1980 video turns to black

I have an issue with a Panasonic AG1980, and I was hoping somebody could maybe identify the problem and tell me if it's something that's fixable.

The unit plays tapes perfectly at first, then after 45 minutes or so of continuous playing, the video starts to get fuzzier and fuzzier until it goes out completely. I was capturing a tape the last time it happened, and I put the last 10 seconds before the video went out on youtube :
http://youtu.be/-7kY1A4QuPA

The unit doesn't seem to run hot. If I eject the tape and put it right in, the problem returns. But if I wait a little (say 30 minutes) most of the time the video is back to normal. One time, I captured a 3 hours event without watching it, and looking at the capture after I noticed that the video went out after an hour, but then went back to normal at the 2 hours mark...

I tried another power cord (I have other AG1980 VCRs) and I can rule that out. The problem is not coming from the tape itself, as I tried a few and the issue keeps occuring regardless.

Any idea what could be wrong ?

Where do the famous "black bars" come from?!

Hi all,

Still new and learning, can i ask, at what point in a dvd rip do the "black bars" at bottom and top of the file appear? Does is depend on the original DVD? I use DVDfab to rip and then Handbrake to encode, is this something i can adjust? If i already have an encoded file with it can i change this?

Sorry for all the questions, im finding a step learning curve!

Thanks for any advice.

XLR cables for camcorder question.

I have never used camcorders that use XLR connectors before and am not sure of the quality process. I know with HDMI there is no difference as it either works or it does not. With XLR is that the case because I know here we are working with audio. Thanks.

Hello,

Firstly let me start by saying I'm not very computer-wise. I have no idea how to read codecs or anything so please feel free to speak to me like I am thick (in this sense I definitely am)

Basically I deleted some files, thinking I'd transferred them onto a computer. Then recorded over the top. I managed to find and recover them using Wondershare Data Recovery and they have come back in this format '_VI_0144.MOV'. They have differing sizes and date/time recorded which correlate to the correct time in which I shot the footage, but no details in the dimensions or duration part. I can't upload them into final cut or open them with quicktime as it says the file isn't supported.

Would any lovely person out there be able to help? I feel I'm so close yet so far from recovering them and I really need the files (my fault, I know!)

Thank you so much in advance,

Anja x

CableCard in danger?

The CableCard—that small slab that lets a TiVo tune into cable by authenticating its connection—would lose a regulatory safeguard under a bill nearing introduction in Congress. The "‘Consumer Video Device Cost Savings Act" proposes to squelch the authority of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to make cable operators use CableCards in their own boxes—a rule enacted in 2007 that discourages second-class treatment of third-party devices like TiVo DVRs.
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/08/tivo-media-center-pc-makers-alarmed-by-cabl...-cutting-bill/

This is an issue for me since I use Windows Media Center on an HTPC instead of paying the cable company $20 a month for a PVR and "PVR service".

mini dv and PAL

hello all,

I have on old childhood VHS tape that is in PAL standard. I live in US now though, and thinking of converting the VHS tape to digital though a video shop.

I am trying to figure out to what I should convert the tape to. To which format and medium? I suppose to keep the best quality I should keep it in PAL, but to which format? Converting to a DVD is not as high quality I hear... I really want to preserve the quality as best as I can.

Also, I don't have a bluray drive, so converting the tape to bluray disk can't work atm. I have a mini dv camcorder that I've bought here in US, and I'm wondering if i could convert the PAL VHS tape to a mini dv tape, and then transfer the video to my computer through my camcorder. Will my camera be able to play it even if the video is PAL? My camera is Panasonic PV-GS19.

$3000 budget for camcorder/ what would you get?

I have another camcorder to get from a grant received. I can spend around $3000 or a little more but not much more. What camcorder would you get? No real low light issues but I think when you get to this level most do well in low light anyway. Now, we don't have to spend it all if something for cheaper is better.

Trying to get to the bottom of this issue with avisource()

When incorporating avisource() in a QTGMC deinterlace script it causes problems - i.e. processing the file with audio included the resulting file is messed up, if I do it without audio the problems don't show up. Using ffmpegsource() instead I don't have the problems.

Others say they don't have this problem that they can use avisource() just fine. It's been suggested that something is buggy with the VFW DV decoder and decoding pathway.

So, how do I determine what that something is and fix it? Using a standard Windows XP Pro install, don't know why this aspect of things would be messed up. If others don't have this issue I should be able to achieve the same state.

What info should I include to facilitate diagnosis?

Thanks for all input.

Problems with MKVMerge!

Hello!
I have a problem with MKVMerge. Caught an MKV file working perfectly, I can extract the audio and H.264 would like to put it. Until then it's all right. The problem is the time to unite again H.264 with audio. I can create the MKV, but the video gets smaller and loses all audio synch. Can anyone help?
Thanks!

Hi Everyone - USB Question

I am looking for a TV for my camper that supports USB Video Input. I have a DVD player that plays my Flash Drives with .vob files. So there must be a 24" TV that will play them. TV manufacturers are shooting themselves in the foot by not adding this feature. I don't care to look at Photos on my TV ): .... That's like putting an 8 track player in a F-16 Jet.

DVD and MP4 movie times not matching

I've tried searching but can't find an exact query.

I looked at the movie times of a DVD and the converted MP4 and notice the movie times don't appear to add up. For example, at 1:30 on the DVD the same scene does not appear on the MP4, its another scene. Also, the full move lengths don't seem the same. Is there a reason for this or could it be my settings causing this? The video looks exact, the aspect ratio the same, etc. Just the times are off.

Thank you.

Capturing HD video with laptop - enough power?

I've got a fairly modest Lenovo i5 laptop and I'm wondering if it would be suitable to use for capturing HD video via an external USB capture device. One thing I'm not sure of is whether or not the graphics card matters when capturing video, or if it's mainly the CPU and RAM. The laptop has integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics, and I'm not sure if this is good enough for smooth captures. Here are the relevant system specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.5GHz (Ivy Bridge)
RAM: 8 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM
Video: Intel HD Graphics 4000
Storage: 500 GB 7200 RPM SATA HD

It has USB3 ports, if that would make a difference. Is this good enough for capturing HD video?
