How to correct an interlaced video converted to progressive?

Hi,
I'm working on correction of many videos natively interlaced, but converted in progressive without deinterlacing. I think these videos was interlaced PAL format 720x576, then resized to 720x540. The results is inhevitable.
I'm trying to remove the artifacts of interlacing with VirtualDub. In the next reply, I'll attach an image of what I'm doing. If you have any suggestions, you are welcome!

Watching a M3U8 stream in KODI

I've been trying to watch a live news stream on my Amazon Fire TV (Android) using a version of Firefox. However, visiting the webpage causes the browser to crash 99% of the time. So then I thought that I would just find the URL to the stream and play it directly in KODI media player. I used my web browsers developer tools to find a link that contained "index.m3u8".

The problem I have is that it appears to me that the link is not "static", I'm guessing that it is only authorizing me for a limited time or only through a web browser. Not really sure how it works. Is there any way to find a URL that would work permanently and not temporarily? The following is the site I've been using, make sure to use an ad-blocker if you visit. https://anonym.to/?https://www.livenewsnow.com/american/cnn-news-usa.html

Lost frames/packets when transferring HDV footage from MiniDV via Firewire

$

Hi,

So I transferred over 30 MiniDV tapes to my computer through Firewire recently without any issues, once I finally got hold of a working camera.
I was using WinDV, on a Windows Vista computer.
Then I had a few MiniDV tapes that were recorded on a HDV camera, in high definition. I noticed WinDV could not transfer 1080p HDV files from MiniDV, so I downloaded HDVSplit instead, which was recommended on a website I was reading on.
All through the transfer process, there were warning messages stating "WARNING: Some packets have been lost.". Not just 1 or 2, but several hundreds! When rewinding the tape and doing it over again, the dropped frames/packets occur in different places every time. When I play the transferred m2t files back, every moment when there was a lost packet during the transfer process, there are pixel artifacts / clicks / stops, etc. This is what I have tried so far:

1. Tried multiple tapes, to make sure the problem wasn't due to the tape - no difference no matter which tape I try

2. Moved the PCI-E card over to a stronger computer. The initial computer was a Windows Vista PC, with 1.70 Ghz processor and 16 Gb RAM. The second computer was a Windows 7 PC with 3.50 Ghz and 16 Gb RAM. This made no difference.

3. Tried ripping to a internal secondary drive (not the C: drive) on both computers. The second computer also has a third drive, which is a SSD. I tried transferring to that as well. None of this helped the dropped packet problem.

4. Tried different Firewire cords, which also didn't help.

5. Tried both with and without the "preview" window turned on, which didn't help.

I simply don't understand why the standard resolution DV footage worked flawlessly, but as soon as I try the HDV footage I get hundreds of dropped packets? The DV vs HDV footage takes up equal discspace, so it couldn't be a matter of the data not transferring / being written fast enough.

Unless these hassles are software related and HDVSplit is the reason for the problems. Is there a different software I could use that you think would work better, or do you have any idea what could be the cause of the dropped packets?

waveform problem in Subtitle Edit 3.4.6

The past few times I've tried to create a waveform using SE it has been really slow. It used to create the waveform in a matter of minutes, but lately it's been going at such a slow speed that it would take several hours. I should mention that I'm using a laptop, so I don't know if it's a memory or space issue, but I was using this same laptop before when it was working fine. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?

FFMPEG and new GPU-based YADIF_CUDA deinterlacer

$

It seems ffmpeg is cross-compilable (non-free, using the new nvidia CUDA 10.1 toolkit) with the now-inbuilt GPU based YADIF_CUDA deinterlacer mentioned in the nvidia forum here: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1042459/video-codec-and-optical-flow-sdk/nvde...ing-deint-2-/2
ffmpeg documentation here https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-filters.html#yadif_005fcuda

Has anyone done any comparative speed tests of the (hopefully extreme-speed!) GPU-based YADIF_CUDA deinterlacer eg vs vanilla YADIF ?
eg with mode=0,parity=-1,deint=0

Suggestions and comments and the commandlines would be very welcome.
(although, I do prefer not to use the nvdec h.264 hardware decoder in ffmpeg).

Easiest way to mass convert VOBSUB to SRT without extract/remux?

$

I have a ton of old cartoons (100+) all have VOBSUB as subtitles. Id like to convert them to SRT either as a separate file or embedded back into the MKV. Is there a program that can do this for me automatically?

I know I can use mkvmergeGUI to extract VobSUB then convert it and remux with mkvmergeGUI again. But to do that 100+ times would be very tedious. Im willing to do it, but want to see if there is an easier way first?

MiniDV to PC

Hi guys,

Complete video noob here looking for a helping hand.

I've got a Panasonic NV-DS65 video camera and some old MiniDV tapes with some recordings that are pretty close to my heart and it would gut me to lose the footage. I've been looking into trying to put the footage onto my PC and it works. I can record the footage using recording software but I can't get the audio to be put along side the video. I know this is a question that has been asked here a lot and I have consulted the other posts first but I simply can't get the audio recording to work...

Allow me to explain the setup I have:

Into the videocamera I have plugged in a A/V out RCA cable and attached that to one of those USB2.0 Chinese Audio/Video grabber thingies using RCA cable. I've installed the drivers and am using the custom software that was on the CD to record the video. All of that works fine, the video footage gets saved to the PC, great stuff. However I'm struggling with getting the audio as well. My thought was that if I just connect the correct cables, the grabber will do the rest.

Both the audio and video drivers are installed on the PC and I've tried different kind of approaches like using an external mic to act as the audio input for the recording but I think I'm simply missing something to get the original setup to work. Can someone please advise on where I'm going wrong ? I'm not a really tech savy guy but all of the "instructions" I've found both on Youtube, the CD software manual, forums, google, ... haven't really brought me closer to a solution.

PS: would a better option be to simply connect the camera to the PC using a FireWire cable ? Will I then get both audio and video ?

All help is appreciated and i apologise for my bad english.

Joining MKV with subs in multiple languages with MKVToolnix

$

(very sorry for my very bad english)

I have: 1.MKV, 2.MKV,...,~400.MKV
All MKV: 1 Video, 1 Audio, 0-3 Subs.
The typ (resolution, framerate and so on) of video-, audio- and sub-streams are absolut intentical in all MKVs.

I append the MKVs with MKVToolnix.
The video and audio was very good, no errors.

But with the subs there are this problems. Example:
25.MKV:
ID=2, pgs-subs, german forced
ID=3, pgs-subs, german full
ID=4, pgs-subs, english full
39.MKV:
ID=2, pgs-subs, english full
42.MKV:
ID=2, pgs-subs, german full
ID=3, pgs-subs, english full

The subs in the result of MKVToolnix are err, because the subs-IDs are not identical in all MKVs.

I want, that MKVToolnix sort the subs with her language and not with her ID.
To move in MKVToolnix the subs manually is too much work for me :)

Can anyone help me please?

Why would a movie i encoded to MP4 but set the audio to MP3 not even show up on a iPad? Change the audio to aac and it shows up with the same video settings.

I only picked MP3 since i thought it may reduce the file size.

Are these wipes safe to clean video heads with?

Muxing MKVs in MKVToolNix 31.0.0 loses video quality

$

Hey guys, I did a little reading on different forums and saw some posts from several years ago, but none with a definitive answer (maybe there isn't one?). I got MKVToolNix 31.0.0 thinking that I would be able to strip away subtitles and unwanted audio away from MKV files, without affecting video quality. I started noticing that when I organize my newly muxed MKVs (subtitles and audio stripped) in Plex, the video bitrate seems to go down. I read that MKVToolNix doesn't do any encoding/re-encoding so, in theory, the video quality should not be affected. But my tests, and a few other reports I've read on forums, leaves me with questions on this.

I conducted about 5 experiments on the same file to test this out. I was hoping that if I gave you guys enough details, you guys might have a couple answers/theories as to why the video bitrate goes down if I'm simply stripping unwanted audio and subtitles. So here we go

Computer

MacBook Pro TB 2018
macOS Mojave
MKV ToolNix 31.0.0 (Recently updated from 30.0.0)

Source MKV File Tested

The Equalizer 2
File Size = 16.17GB
Video Tracks = 1
Audio Tracks = 2
  • TrueHD Atmos
  • AC3
Subtitle Tracks = 17
  • HDMV PGS = 16 (Various Languages)
  • SRT = 1

So I tested muxing this 5 times. I muxed it twice without changing any settings to make absolutely sure video quality or size would not decrease... and it didn't, which is good. But the others, I had unexpected results, and here they are...

First Mux Test
Didn't uncheck any boxes. Left File as is.
Result: No change in file size [16.17 GBs] or Video size [19135 kbps]
Image
[Attachment 48252 - Click to enlarge]

Second Mix Test (Same)
Again, didn't uncheck any boxes. Left File as is.
Result: No change in file size [16.17 GBs] or Video size [19135 kbps]
Image
[Attachment 48253 - Click to enlarge]

Third Mux Test (Same)
Last time for sanity check, didn't uncheck any boxes. Left File as is.
Result: No change in file size [16.17 GBs] or Video size [19135 kbps]
Image
[Attachment 48251 - Click to enlarge]

Great, so the Muxes were quick, and no file size or video quality was reduced. Now I changed things...

Fourth Mux Test
Unchecked all foreign language subtitles. Unchecked AC3 Audio. Left only 2 HDMV PGS subtitles, and the TrueHD Audio track.
Result: Smaller file size [15.5 GBs] (expected), and smaller video bitrate [18351 kbps] (unexpected).
Image
[Attachment 48255 - Click to enlarge]

So I thought maybe the PGS Subtitles had something to do with it...

Fifth Mux Test
Unchecked only AC3 Audio. Left all HDMV PGS and SRT subtitles, and the TrueHD Audio track.
Result: Smaller file size [15.63 GBs] (expected), and smaller video bitrate [18494 kbps] (unexpected).
Image
[Attachment 48256 - Click to enlarge]

So to sum it up, when I strip anything away, it seems the video bitrate is going down. My question for your brilliant minds. Why is the Video Quality decreasing if I'm not re-encoding anything? Any help is appreciated guys. Thank you in advance! :)

PgcDemux alternative for Blu-Ray's?

$

Hi guys!

Background:
I don't like one-click-all-in-one-apps e.g. FairUse Wizard / GuardianKnot, but have always used "manual" steps to encode MPEG-4 backup rips of my DVD collection. First I run PGCDemux for (main) VideoFile.m2v and AudioFile.ac3, then "rundll32.exe vobsub.dll,Configure" to extract VobSubs, then I run ffmpeg by command line to do the encoding with desired tuning options. Finally I run mkvmerge to wrap everything together in a nice MKV file.

Now:
I'm starting to get more and more Blu-ray movies, and I've bought myself a Blu-ray player for my PC. I know I'll probably need to buy Redfox AnyDVD HD too, since 99.9% of all Blu-ray titles have some sort of copy protection. Anyways, when I'm up to speed with all that, what's my best "equivalent" to the ~300kB utility "pgcdemux.exe" to do Blu-ray titles? I'm assuming that Blu-ray's don't even use the "PGC" scheme anymore, so I'm guessing I need different utilities to "extract" the ~25GB piece of high-bitrate h264 + audio streams?

TL;DR:
Is there any minimalistic utility (like PgcDemux for DVD's) to extract Blu-ray streams from their discs?

Capturing and deinterlacing with AmaRecTV

$

0
I'm using a Diamond VC500 with AmaRecTV to capture a small collection of VHS home recordings. I've done a few test files and so far I'm pleased with how it has been working but my only issue is with deinterlacing. AmaRecTV has a few presets that are all geared for capturing gaming footage, I've tried each of them and there was slight improvement but wasn't great overall.

My plan is the capture all the video in Lagarith (which I'll save as an archive file) then convert them to H.264 to view on computer and stream over the local network to tv.

Should I be saving the initial archive files interlaced and then deinterlacing them in another program, perhaps when I convert to H.264? What program should I be using for this?

Thanks.
