Fastest possible mp4 video encoding solution (quality is not important)

$

Hello guys,

I edit 4K and HD mp4 videos with adobe premiere. The problem is when editing these videos, the seeking and playback becomes very laggy
due to high video quality and it makes the editing painful. What I do is that I re-encode my video to much lower resolution and then do my
work on the low quality edited video and all goes nice and smooth. Once editing is done, I replace the file with the original and do my export.

The only problem is that I loose a lot of time doing the conversion. It would be really great if someone would help me find a way to do this the
fastest possible. What software can do this fast (or what settings/profiles) should I use to make sure that the software is not loosing time trying
to get best possible quality.

MKV Problem when Spliting

I have a series, in which the Opening and Ending were removed from the episodes, and linked using ordered chapters/segment linking.

I'm trying to undo this, merging the OP and ED back into each episode.

The layout of the episodes is the following: Prologue - Opening - Episode - Ending - Preview

Here's my plan:

1. Remove chapters from episode
2. Split episode into 3 separate mkv (prologue + episode + preview)
3. Append everything in the correct order (prologue + opening + episode + ending + preview)

However, I'm stuck at #2.

I'm using MKVToolNix-GUI to split, but for some reason, prologue mkv always ends with an extra 3s of nothing.
This means that when I append everything, there's a 3s break between prologue ending and opening starting.

I've tried both split by timecodes, and split by parts based on timecodes, and the result is the same.

I try to split at 00:01:06, and for some reason, the resulting file is always 00:01:09 long.

When I try to play this file in VLC for example, as soon as the video hits the 00:01:06 timestamp, the player just closes the video. However, it does state in the timebar that the video has a duration of 00:01:09, and so does Mediainfo.

Why is this hapening, and how can I fix this?

Subrip restarts subtitle timing after ~1 hour 30 minutes

Occasionally SubRip-1.56.1 loses the incremental timing in subtitles so I go from 1 hr. 30 minutes in one subtitle to 5 seconds in the next, resulting in overlap with the beginning of the movie and the last ~1/2 hour of the movie.

Easy to fix, I just add ~ 1 hr. 30 minutes to every subtitle after the glitch. But it's annoying.

Any thoughts?

Only happens occasionally and (so far) only for longer movies.

I use smartripper and extract the subs to separate VOBs before using subrip. No real reason for using separate VOBs other than habit (I read somewhere they give better synchronization).

Thx

On retail DVD's, you can only read but not write, They are always full to capacity.

I'm burning a home movie ISO (2gb) to a dvd (4gb), And I can always still add files to the DVD after the burning, does my ISO have to be 4GB.

Problem digitizing vinyl audio

I just tried making a recording from a a couple of different vinyl records with a brand new stylus in Audacity and every few seconds the stereo image will suddenly alternate between (and it's hard to explain) jumping the panning from left to right and vice versa. It's not a hard pan (the other channel does not go silent) but the audio seems to suddenly move from the center to somewhere in the left to suddenly somewhere in the right with a loud click at these points (a digital click, not a vinyl click). I am recording into a Xonar U7.

You can hear it in this sample file - this is the raw audio; I have simply faded it in and out at each end. Check out the sudden shift in imaging around 8 seconds in and again at 12 seconds. What is causing this and how do I stop it? I tried centering the phase in Audition but it doesn't help.

Thanks to anyone who might be able to help.

H264 2pass messed up private data for joining files

I've got several 2-part (two separate files) movies which I encoded as MP4, MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 using 2-Pass ABR (6.000 bitrate / 12.000 vbv max bitrate) from it's sources.

Now i wanted to join all 2-part movies into a single file using MKVToolNix - but unfortunately only about 20% could be processed, the rest resulted in a warning:
  • The codec's private data does not match (lengths: 40 and 40).
These 80% play the first part correct and then show a blue/red/green screen where the the second part should be. The lengths are always the same - but it seems like the 2pass encoding messed up a tiny part, but which?

There's also a bug report on the x264-devel mailing list.

My question is now:
  • Is 2pass encoding in general a really bad idea if you plan to join two files?
  • What was going wrong while encoding? What messed up the encoder?
  • What exactly does "length: 40" mean? Is there a free tool to inspect this parameter?
  • Is there anything i could do with these already encoded files to get them together? Re-encode the second track one more time lossless? Which tool would you recommend here?

480x480 Interlaced: to Resize or Not?

$

So I've got some old captures I found in mpeg2 format. I'd like to preserve as much quality as possible, but wanted to crop/mask the overscan area and add to my Plex library. So... since I'm having to process them, I figured I'd deinterlace and resize via virtualdub and then transcode using vidcoder.

Source:
Format : MPEG Video
Format version : Version 2
Format profile : Main@Main
Format settings, BVOP : Yes
Format settings, Matrix : Custom
Format settings, GOP : M=3, N=30
Format settings, picture structure : Frame
Duration : 19mn 52s
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 2 179 Kbps
Width : 480 pixels
Height : 480 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 4:3
Frame rate : 29.970 (30000/1001) fps

Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
Bit depth : 8 bits
Scan type : Interlaced
Scan order : Top Field First
Compression mode : Lossy
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.315
etc.

Question time: When resizing, would you change the 480x480 video to a resolution more readily acceptable for viewing on a pc? Or should I just leave it alone, and continue to scale in media player(s)?

Problem with Deinterlacing/Fieldmatching

Hi, I have an interlaced video that I can't seem to convert properly to 23.976p. The first clip is all jerky and gets a framerate of 35.5fps if I try to fieldmatch or deinterlace it. The second clip looks fine with TFM(order=1, slow=2), but the output is still 25(.28)fps. Time duration tells me the videos aren't sped up. Can anyone help me?

XMedia Recode - mkv settings for LG 3DTV (2011)? VidCoder works, XMedia not

As title says, I'm having problems encoding files through latest XMedia with the same configuration as VidCoder, which works perfectly for my TV USB native player but doesn't allow me to burn-in .ass subtitles (which are necessary for 3D viewing). XMedia gives me the "unsupported video codec" message on TV, as well as the error (little X) thumbnail.

Does anyone know which settings should I accomodate in XMedia Recode so I can replicate the functioning VidCoder encoding?

Here is the MediaInfo of a VidCoder-encoded perfectly playable file:

Possible to use DGIndex on MKV files from MakeMKV?

$

One thing that's been lacking with DGIndex is the ability to pull separate titles and the chapters and subtitles with it. My workaround had been to use DGIndex to index VOB files and then mux the final encoded x264 video with the mkv files created by MakeMKV. It's almost perfect except that anything not title00 (the very first episode on a disc) is going to have the subtitles and chapters off by a fraction of a second. Yes, I know this is usually not even noticeable. Is it possible, though, to use DGIndex on the remuxed mkv's created by MakeMKV and have perfectly timed chapters and subs?

Hi Just looking for what to call this effect - and then try to find a solution. I'm referring to the effect visible to the right of the speaker, most evident at the shoulder.

Workflow is 1980p->vc500->raw capture in virtualdub-> encode in megui w/ avisynth

Thanks for any help/suggestions

Solar eclipse converting AVCHD to image sequences...

$

I've got lots of video files of the eclipse and want to use some tools which can align the video frame to correct for the earth's movement. I've seen a java program made for medical imaging called ImageJ that has some plugins which may be helpful and I want to give those a try.

I'd like to use Vdub to create the images but I've run into a problem I don't know how to correct. The source files are Canon AVCHD files recorded at 1440x1080 and when vdub outputs the image sequence it does as 1440x1080 (surprise!). But this display aspect ratio isn't correct as this is a HD (16:9) format. I can't find how to adjust the DAR for the source files. Is there a way to get vdub to output an image sequence with a correction for the 16:9 DAR?

My recordings were several 4 minute clips where the sun/moon move from the upper left to lower mid edge and I'm hoping to post process this to center everything. I'm also interested in hearing other ideas there are better ways.

I've attached an image to show what I mean about the AR on the images...

Mpg Streamclip playback problem

$

Hi,

When i open some footage on mpg streamclip and play it, its choppy and the screen gets "displaced" inside the video itself, lets say im playing a video, so it starts, and for some reason, the first frame freezes and another "screen" appears on top of that frame but smaller and displaced to the right/bottom. If i play the video on fullscreen it plays perfectly, not choppy and no displacement occurs. If i move the player in windowed mode, no displacement occurs but its equally choppy.

my impression is that this is a memory related problem, it has to spend too many resources while playing windowed.

Can i fix this somehow?

Thank you.
